What I Learned In Year 30🙄

Today is my 31st birthday. It prompted me to think about some of the most important things I've learned in the past year, and encouraged me to set a few goals for the next year of my life.

Year 30 was the year of the Warlock...

Thierry Adler is my favorite character. He is the best and the worst parts of each story he's featured in🤣😜, and he always seems to know more than I give him credit for.

Without his character, I'm not sure how (or if) I would ever have become a better writer. At times, Thierry is a struggle to write for, but I'm grateful to have him in my dossier of characters to choose from.

Audio is not my calling, but with a little effort and a lot of stick-to-it-ness, I think I can create a series of self-read horror stories I'll be proud of.

This year, I went waaaaaay out of my comfort zone and recorded the first season of my Have Tools, Will Travel web series. It was 15 episodes -- 15 stories I wrote and narrated all by myself😱-- and I can't tell you how surprised I was when they turned out sounding not half bad (for an ameture).

My ultimate goal is to get good enough at voice acting and narration to record my own audiobooks. I believe it's possible!

I'm now armed with a Blue Yeti Microphone and a Knox Gear pop filter, so I'm ready to buckle down and start learning how to master my own audio!

Trello is great for writers and I have great friends.

Not too long ago, I was on Twitter feeling completely overwhelmed and stuck. I'd started writing (yet another) attempt at a full fledged horror novel called "The Seed". Only, 76 pages in, all of my creativity just stopped. Things weren't making sense in the novel. I didn't know where I was going, so, I just stopped writing, hoping the problem would work itself out with time.

I know, rookie mistake. Novels don't write themselves. Anyway, one of my outstanding Twitter friends, Micah Chaim Thomas, replied to my tweet and asked what he could do to help. I told him I was stuck, so he proceeded to tell me how Trello had helped him out in the past and how easy it was to use when he outlined his stories.

Micah even made a board, uniquely fitted to my story and set it up in Trello for me to fill out.

This was one of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me. To take the story details I'd sent him and perse them out into an easier way for me to view them--- well, that's just Micah for you I guess👌. He's awesome, and if you don't follow him on Twitter or know him, then you totally should, he may have saved this project for me.
I'm also working with a book coach who is willing to put her head together with mine and help me figure out what should happen next in the story. (I know she's good people because we share the same birthday!😜) Check her out on Twitter: Lanie Goodell !

With any luck, "The Seed" will be my first full length novel. I have strong feelings about this book, and I feel like it could be THE ONE. lol.

Last but not least, I've learned that (even though I haven't been on as much as I once was), Twitter is a great place to hang out if you're a creative.

There's no better feeling than being able to talk about our creative projects with like-minded people. The ability to bounce ideas off of folks who won't judge you, make fun of you or question why your even bothering -- is freakin' priceless.

So, what are my goals for year 31?

They're pretty simple, but the TL;DR version is:

Get better at audio.
Keep writing.
Scare people consistently🤣💀.
Never give up!

Thanks for reading!❤

  1. Happy Birthday, Badness! You could have left that "scare people consistently" out of the post, you know! LMAO! Enjoy your special day! <3

    1. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Scaring ppl is kinda my thing tho.🤔

      Oh, and making awkward jokes.💗
